Cypress Semiconductor announce that LSI has selected Cypress’s parallel nonvolatile Static Random Access Memories for its new 12Gb/s SAS Host Bus Adapters for high-performance servers, workstations and external storage systems. The nvSRAMs provide the SAS HBAs with high-speed and low-voltage fail-safe memory that enhances LSI’s solutions. LSI also chose the parallel nvSRAM for its flexibility to operate at different voltages and for its established track record as a journal memory.

LSI recently introduced the LSI SAS 9300 HBA family, the industry’s first 12Gb/s SAS HBA solution for high-performance servers, workstations and external storage systems. The family accelerates storage and is designed to meet the high-performance application needs for a range of environments including transactional databases, Web 2.0, data mining, video streaming and editing.

Cypress’s parallel nvSRAMs offer access times as low as 25 ns, making them the fastest asynchronous nonvolatile RAMs in the market. nvSRAMs feature infinite read, write and recall cycles, with 20-year data retention, making them the ideal solution for applications requiring continuous high-speed writing of data and absolute nonvolatile data security, without a battery back-up.

Robin Wagner, senior director of marketing at LSI, commented: ”The transition to 12Gb/s SAS has been fueled by the needs of businesses to manage an ever-increasing volume of storage in datacenters. We have had proven success with nvSRAMs as a journal memory, and they met our stringent performance requirements for the LSI 9300 product family. The flexibility of parallel nvSRAMs to extend operation below 3V simplified the design process and accelerated our time to market.”

The parallel nvSRAMs are available in densities from 256 kb to 8 Mb in multiple configurations. The devices operate over full industrial temperature grade and are available in industry-standard packages such as 32-SOIC, 44-TSOPII, 48-SSOP, 48-FBGA and 54-TSOPII.

“We’re pleased to have storage industry leader LSI adopt our parallel nvSRAMs. Having parallel nvSRAMs used in the industry’s first 12Gb/s solution is a strong validation of the speed and reliable performance they deliver,” added Rainer Hoehler, Senior Director of the Nonvolatile Products Business Unit at Cypress.

Cypress’s nvSRAMs are manufactured on its SONOS (Silicon Oxide Nitride Oxide Silicon) embedded nonvolatile memory technology. nvSRAMs are ideal solutions for applications requiring high performance and absolute nonvolatile data security such as RAID systems, PLCs, industrial data loggers, computing and networking systems, motor drives, routers and switches, avionics, defense systems, and gaming systems.
