Switching regulators have extended input and temperature ranges
RECOM's three-terminal R-78 series switching regulators have long been a popular replacement for lossy '78 series' linear types, with dramatic improvements in efficiency eliminating the need for heatsinks, saving cost and precious board space.
Now, the range has been extended with the cost-effective R-78CK-0.5 series, operating to 40V input and over a wider ambient temperature range to +100°C. Output current rating is 0.5A and fixed output voltages available are 3.3V, 5V, 12V, and 15V.
The efficiency of the R-78CK-0.5 series peaks at 96%, allowing an operation to +100°C ambient with no or minimal derating at the minimum input voltage, depending on variant. At higher input voltages, the full 0.5A output can be drawn up to a minimum of +65°C ambient, depending on variant.
Full input under-voltage, short-circuit, and thermal protection is provided, and the parts are certified to IEC/EN 62368-1 3rd edition.
Other enhancements compared with the R-78E series include lower quiescent current, a lower allowable input-output differential voltage for the 3.3V and 5V output parts, and a smaller package size in each dimension while still maintaining the standard pinout.
Matthew Dauterive, DC/DC product manager of RECOM comments: "The R-78CK-0.5 series now addresses wider applications with its higher input voltage rating and wider operating temperature range".
Parts include a three-year warranty, and samples and OEM pricing are available from all authorised distributors, or directly from RECOM.
