Tom White, senior lecturer in Victoria's School of Design, has created Smilevector—a bot that examines images of people, then adds or removes smiles to their faces. "It has examined hundreds of thousands of faces to learn the difference between images, by finding relations and reapplying them," says Mr White. For his Master's research, Stuart focused on restoring balance for trans-tibial amputees while swimming, a solution that would improve accessibility and enjoyment, and make it easier for those with below-the-knee amputations to exercise. His Master's thesis, titled "Printable Prosthetics", stemmed from an idea brought to Victoria by the New Zealand Artificial Limb Service (NZALS).
Detecting single molecules with light-based technology
A team of engineering researchers from the University of Victoria and the University of Rochester has developed a way to detect single molecules using a light-based technology inspired by the "whispering gallery" effect, first discovered in London's iconic St. Paul's Cathedral. The technology, described in a study published in the peer-reviewed journal, Nature Communications, has many potential applications, including medical diagnostics, dr...
