Compact IREDs target VR and AR eye-tracking systems
A transmitter has been released by Osram Opto Semiconductors, based on the company’s proven Firefly platform, used widely for LEDs in the visible spectrum. The SFH 4055 transmitter, Osram’s smallest side-looking infrared LED to date, has a wavelength of 850nm and is primarily targeted at eye-tracking systems in augmented and virtual reality headsets. Eye-tracking systems use multiple infrared LEDs to illuminat...
Project to develop mass market UV LEDs for disinfection
Eco-friendly purification of water – UV light is already being used to kill water-borne germs but the light sources used for this purpose are still predominantly mercury vapor lamps. UV LEDs have so far proved unattractive for reasons of cost. The aim of the UNIQUE project funded by the Bavarian Ministry for Economic Affairs, Media, Energy and Technology is therefore to develop high-power UV LEDs for industrial use.
Osram acquires stake in plantCube developer agrilution
Osram has acquired a stake in Munich-based start-up agrilution. The lighting group holds a strategic minority interest in the company via its venture capital arm Fluxunit. The start-up has developed a smart indoor growing box, the plantCube, that serves as a salad, vegetable and herb garden for the home. Even users without any gardening expertise are now able to greatly increase yield due to a specially optimized LED technology and other innovati...
Osram named Eurovision's official lighting partner
As the official lighting partner for the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC), Osram had already given excellent support to the mega show business event in 2015 in Vienna and in 2016 in Stockholm. As a powerful company for state-of-the-art digital lighting technology Osram will continue the successful collaboration this year in Kyiv (resp. Kiev).
LED light glasses enhance focus for athletes
The German Skiing Association (DSV) and lighting expert Osram are positive about their collaboration so far. To mobilize new energy reserves among its athletes, the DSV has been applying the latest findings on “biologically effective light” for more than two years now. Specially designed LED light glasses, now being presented at the German Alpine Skiing Championships, are used to prepare for night races.
Shop lighting integrates digital beacon technology
At this year’s EuroShop trade fair in Düsseldorf, Osram will showcase its most recent developments for product presentations in retail outlets. In brick-and-mortar stores, lighting is crucial for presenting products and is therefore a key factor in the customer’s overall shopping experience. On top of its lighting prowess, Osram can also contribute digital expertise, thus enabling retailers and brand manufacturers to carry the ad...
Eye don't believe it: Iris scanner protects your home
The new SFH 4787S Infrared LED (IRED) for iris scanners illuminates the eyes so evenly that the software identifying the iris pattern now hardly needs to correct artefacts. Like its predecessor (SFH 4786S), its direction of emission is slightly angled rather than vertical, thus simplifying the design process by eliminating the usual mechanical aids.
International project improves LED properties
Given the growing demands placed on the electrical, optical and thermal functionality of LEDs, engineers are paying more and more attention to the advancement of new material properties. As a result, the FLINGO project (Functional Inorganic Layers for Next Generation Optical Devices) was established to develop new materials (layers, in particular) and processes to improve the efficiency and durability of LEDs.
Osram celebrates 110th birthday atop Germany's highest peak
High-performance sport meets high-performance lighting: Osram crowned the celebrations commemorating its 110th brand anniversary with a spectacular event at the top of the Zugspitze, attended by some of Germany's best ice hockey players. Eight members of Germany's championship winning team, EHC Red Bull Munich, played an evening ice-hockey game against a stunning alpine backdrop, with the help of high-tech lighting provided by Osram.
Retrofit system deactivates germs without using chemicals
Air-conditioning systems can be breeding grounds for bacteria and viruses, particularly if they are not cleaned regularly. What’s more, air conditioning systems can distribute these pathogens throughout the entire room. With Air Zing 2020 from Osram, a UV light based retrofit solution for window air conditioning units these germs and organisms are being effectively combated for the first time.
Osram celebrates century partnership with Roman hotel
Lighting manufacturer Osram, which celebrates its 110-year brand anniversary this year, is joined by another famous institution. The Westin Excelsior Hotel in Rome was opened in 1906 and is therefore celebrating its 110 years anniversary. To mark the occasion, Osram will illuminate the venerable hotel, whose past guests have already included celebrities like Pablo Picasso, Elizabeth Taylor and the Rolling Stones, in a particularly spectacular fas...
Space-saving sensor for fitness trackers
The IR Topled D5140 photodiode from Osram Opto Semiconductors requires considerably less PC board space than before, allowing for more compact sensors to be embedded in a design. The spectral sensitivity of the D5140 has been optimised for visible light and allows precise heart rate measurements using red or green light.
LED luminaires bathe St. Peter's Square in holy glow
Osram lends St. Peter's Square in Rome a new sense of radiance. Following refurbishment, modern and energy-efficient outdoor LED luminaires provide a unique lighting experience and also save energy of approximately 70%. The project concept by Direzione dei Servizi Tecnici del Governatorato dello Stato della Città del Vaticano was realised with support from Osram Opto Semiconductors.
Osram reveals a spectrum of infinite possibilities at electronica
From November 8 through 11, 2016 Osram Opto Semiconductors will be showcasing its extensive portfolio of application highlights at electronica in Munich. Visitors to the fair will be able to see the products in action in an extremely wide range of applications and be impressed by the company’s powers of innovation. Osram Opto Semiconductors can be found at booth 107 in hall A3.
Infrared LED emitter paves the way for food analytics
Converter technology for infrared emitters is being used by Osram Opto Semiconductors to produce an LED that emits broadband infrared light in a wavelength range from 650-1,050nm. The main application is near-infrared spectroscopy, such as analysing food to measure fat, protein, water or sugar content.
Osram presents highlights for motorcycle & scooter lighting at Intermot 2016
