The 2020 edition of ‘Global Landscape of Renewable Energy Finance’ highlights however, that while a cumulative $1.8tn were invested during the five-year period, the amount falls short to achieve the global climate comm...
Renewable energy accounts for a third of global power capacity
The decade-long trend of strong growth in renewable energy capacity continued in 2018 with global additions of 171 gigawatts (GW), according to new data released by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). The annual increase of 7.9% was bolstered by new additions from solar and wind energy, which accounted for 84% of the growth. A third of global power capacity is now based on renewable energy.
Deep electrification powered by renewables for a climate-safe future
As the urgency to take bold climate action grows, new analysis by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) finds that scaling-up renewable energy combined with electrification could deliver more than three quarters of the energy-related emission reductions needed to meet global climate goals.
Innovation paves way for global energy transformation
Countries at the forefront of the energy transformation are getting more than a third of their energy from variable renewables like solar and wind, and they’re doing it in a cost effective manner. By making use of innovative solutions that allow to integrate a higher share of renewables into power systems, innovation holds the key to a cost effective global energy transformation.
Renewable energy the competitive source of power generation in GCC
Renewable energy is the most competitive form of power generation in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, according to a new report published today by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). Abundant resources, together with strong enabling frameworks have led to solar PV prices of below three cents per kilowatt hour and dispatchable concentrated solar power (CSP) of 7.3 cents per kilowatt hour, which is less than some utilities i...
Falling costs drive offshore wind power boom
Offshore wind power has the potential to grow from just 13GW in 2015, to 100GW in 2030, according to new analysis from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). Innovation Outlook: Offshore Wind, has been launched at the World Wind Energy Conference in Tokyo and provides an overview of the future developments that will drive the offshore wind power boom, including technology advancements and further cost declines.
Solar energy could meet up to 13% of global power needs by 2030
The share of global electricity generated by solar photovoltaics (PV) could increase from 2% today to as much as 13% by 2030, according to a new report from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
Renewable energy now employs 8.1m people worldwide
More than 8.1m people worldwide are now employed by the renewable energy industry (a 5% increase from last year), according to a report released by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) at its 11th Council meeting. The report, Renewable Energy and Jobs – Annual Review 2016, also provides a global estimate of the number of jobs supported by large hydropower, with a conservative estimate of an additional 1.3m direct jobs worldwide...
Renewable energy is key to socio-economic development
According to a report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Swaziland’s vast renewable energy resources could be leveraged to provide substantial socio-economic benefits for its population. Swaziland Renewables Readiness Assessment estimates that bagasse, a by-product of the local sugar industry, could meet half of all domestic electricity demand while solar power could contribute substantially to the remaining demand.
Renewables will boost Indian economic growth & job creation
The Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Adnan Z Amin, recently delivered a keynote address to the government officials, investors and energy industry leaders in New Delhi, stressing the importance of renewable energy in India, to meet the country's growing energy requirements.
Targets can cut energy-related water use by 22%
According to a new report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), a 22% reduction in water consumption for power generation and associated fuel extraction could be achieved by meeting the renewable energy targets of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region.
$57m wave of renewable energy loans announced
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) has announced $57m in concessional loans for five renewable energy projects in developing countries. The projects to be financed have a combined total capacity of 35MW, bringing reliable and sustainable power to over 280,000 people in rural communities without access to modern energy services. The loans will go to projects in countries including A...
