Optoelectronics, discretes market back on growth trail

TSMC outpaces foundry rivals in revenues per wafer
TSMC is leading the way in revenues per wafer among the top four pure play semiconductor foundry companies. A report from IC Insights finds that the revenue per wafer start (expressed in 200mm equivalents) varies considerably among foundry companies (Figure 1). Tablets boost personal computing market
According to the IC Market Drivers 2014 report from IC Insights, total shipments of personal computing systems (desktops, notebooks, tablets and Internet/cloud units) are forecast to rise 12% in 2014 to 585m units. This is compared with standard PC shipments (desktops and notebooks) which plunged 9% in 2013 and are forecast to decline 5% to 298m this year.
Wearables and the IoT boost MCU sales
Since losing momentum in the last three years due to economic uncertainty, the microcontrollers market appears to be on the verge of another substantial growth cycle. Report finds analog unit shipments grew 15% in 2013
In its mid-year update to the 2014 McClean Report, IC Insights have highlighted that between 2013 and 2018, analog unit shipments are forecast to grow at an average annual rate of 8.9%. This is faster than the 7.2% forecast for the total IC market and faster than all other major IC product categories (Figure 1).
Asia-Pacific forecast to increase ASIC marketshare
According to data from IC Insights’ Mid-Year Update to the 2014 McClean Report, the Asia-Pacific region is forecast to increase its share of the ASIC market 17 percentage points from 2004 to 2014. IC Insights has also forecast it to the only region to significantly increase in ASIC marketshare.
