Fortum and Rolls-Royce SMR have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly explore the opportunities for the deployment of small modular reactors (SMR) in Finland and in Sweden.

To demonstrate what recycled plastics can do, Fortum has developed a chair made from Fortum Circo recycled plastic produced from post-consumer plastic waste.

Fortum is acquiring the entire shareholding in the Finnish growth company Crisolteq, a specialist in recycling of valuable metals in lithium-ion batteries. The investment strengthens Fortum’s position in the recycling of high value materials in Europe. The recycling of battery metals also supports Fortum’s existing battery business.

A marketplace to kick-start CO2 removal from the atmosphere has been introduced with Puro. Puro is an internal startup at Fortum. This shared experiment pilot is joint by a group of 23 pioneering companies’ aims to find a way to verify, compare and trade CO2 removals.   Electrification will rapidly increase the need for batteries. A new solution by Nordic clean energy company, Fortum makes over 80% of the EV battery recyclable, returns the scarce metals back into circulation and resolves the sustainability gap by reducing the need to mine cobalt, nickel, and other metals.

The clean-energy company, Fortum, is in cooperation with the City of Oslo and the American company Momentum Dynamics to build a wireless fast-charging infrastructure for taxis in the Norwegian capital. The project aims to install wireless charging using induction technology. Charging plates are installed in the ground where the taxi is parked and a receiver is installed in the taxi.

It has been announced that Fortum is launching a significant development project that aims to manufacture high-value products from agro residues and woody biomass to replace the use of fossil and other environmentally taxing raw materials. The project received significant support from Business Finland for a €14.4m, two-year project.

  Startups had a chance to pitch to clean energy company Fortum on a moving electric vehicle during the Finnish startup event Slush. With Pitchalong Shuttle, Fortum looked for partnerships with sustainable and innovative startups in order to find digital solutions for tackling climate change.

Unveiled at a festival in Finland, the Fortum Singalong Shuttle is a taxi that only accepts singing as payment. The emission free electric car rides became a popular form of transport at Finnish Ruisrock festival.

The first High-Power Charging (HPC) corridor will be built by Fortum Charge & Drive between Oslo, Stockholm and Helsinki. The corridor provides charging possibilities for the upcoming models of long range, over 300km, electric vehicles with higher charging speeds. In practice, it means that electric models expected to be on the market by early 2018 will be able to drive from Helsinki to Oslo in the same time as with a conventional car.
