Liberté, égalité, batterie: France’s revolutionary role in battery technologies
“A new industrial revolution”. If I told you that’s how French President François Hollande recently described a form of technology, what would you think he was talking about — Robots, planes or perhaps driverless cars? In fact, Monsieur Hollande was referring to a new lithium battery plant. By Michele Windsor, direct sales and marketing manager, Accutronics
UK battery sector investigated and explained
Although many people believe that Thomas Edison is responsible for the first light bulb, it was in fact British chemist Joseph Swan who invented the light bulb. It was Swan who first developed the incandescent bulb and lit his house with electricity. This is one of many great contributions that the UK has made to the field of science and technology, with the industry showing little signs of slowing down.
Accutronics to exhibit medical batteries at Compamed
Accutronics has announced that it will be exhibiting its extensive range of medical batteries and chargers at Compamed 2016 in Düsseldorf, Germany, 14th to 17th November. The company will also be showcasing a range of products from Ultralife Corporation, a battery systems and communications specialist that acquired Accutronics earlier in 2016. How much power do you need?
OEMs often overlook batteries during the design and development of their product. This has a negative impact later in the process when they turn to off-the-shelf batteries that don’t adequately provide the performance they want. Therefore, Accutronics has created an infographic for portable device designers that outlines the importance of battery consideration during product development.
Germany - but not how you think
When you think of Germany, what do you think of? Most people will usually say football, beer and BMWs. What most people won't say is medical technology (medtech). Despite that, Germany’s medtech sector is by far the largest in Europe and the third largest in the world. It’s home to some of the largest OEMs and presents a wide range of opportunities for technology experts.
Managing component obsolescence in medical devices
The consumer electronics industry has embraced obsolescence as a way of increasing profits. Smartphones, laptops, and media players are designed to fail, central to this is the rechargeable battery. Many manufacturers now seal the battery into the device, so rather than simply swapping the Li-ion battery when it reaches its end of life, users are strong-armed into buying a new product.
Problems with new battery technologies
The battery sector has evolved substantially in recent years. An increased demand for portable power supplies, driven by the momentum at which Industry 4.0 is being implemented, has led to a renewed interest in battery technologies. From edible to foldable and air-powered to urine-powered, there is a multitude of new battery chemistries being researched, some of which sound as though they are verging on science fiction.
The combined power of Ultralife & Accutronics
Symbiosis is interaction between two organisms to the advantage of both. There are many examples of this in the natural and business worlds and battery & comms systems specialist Ultralife Corporation’s purchase of UK battery OEM Accutronics, at the start of 2016, is a perfect example. Here, Rob Phillips, sales and marketing director of Accutronics, explains how the new partnership is the ideal match for both companies and their clients...
UK manufacturing industry is bordering on stagnation
According to the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), the UK manufacturing sector risks stagnation. This warning comes from the BCC’s Quarterly Economic Survey (QES) which saw manufacturing export sales drop to their lowest levels since 2009 in the final quarter of 2015. Rob Phillips, sales and marketing director of professional battery manufacturer Accutronics, investigates how the industry can recover.
Top facts about counterfeit batteries in medtech
International battery specialist, Accutronics, has created a slideshare highlighting the dangers counterfeit batteries pose to medical technology (MedTech). Given the critical nature of medical devices, being caught unaware by the growing number of counterfeit batteries on the market carries serious consequences. The informative slideshare can be found here.
Navigating safe battery transport
There have been numerous stories in the news over recent years surrounding the transport of Li-ion batteries on planes, particularly concerning the risk of them short circuiting during a flight. In light of this, it’s easy to see why international regulations surrounding the shipment of Li-Ion batteries by air is evolving, as Michele Windsor, Marketing Manager for battery OEM Accutronics, explains.
Getting a square peg into a round hole
Have you ever watched a child puzzle over how to get the square peg in their hand into that round hole? Being a battery OEM can often raise the same quandary. However, rather than simply hammering the square peg in as it is, OEM designers take the opportunity to get innovative. Here, Anthony Robinson, engineering manager at Accutronics, looks at how customer needs drive innovation in design.
Battery maker upgrades test capabilities
Battery specialist Accutronics has upgraded its Staffordshire test facility with a new range of specialist battery testing equipment. The new Maccor model 4200 multifunction desktop cabinet and separate floor-standing temperature chamber rigorously tests batteries for applications ranging from portable instrumentation and medical devices to robotics and defence.
The internet of vulnerable things
Every year in Louisville, Kentucky, hackers and security experts gather for DerbyCon. While a get-together of hackers may sound troubling on its own, what’s truly disturbing is what came out of last year’s conference. Medical cyber crime is on the rise, and there are thousands of critical medical devices which can currently be located online and hacked directly. By Rob Phillips, sales and marketing director of Accutronics.

The art of design validation & verification
We've all seen Russian nesting dolls, each perfectly decorated doll giving way to a smaller one inside. Every one of those little dolls is hand turned, carefully decorated and finished with a fine gloss. Medical device design operates on a similar concept, layering smaller components together to form one machine, each component tailored to the needs of the OEM.
