NXP Semiconductors has launched two new HS-CAN transceivers - the TJA1042 and TJA1051. Extending NXP's existing portfolio that includes the widely used TJA1040 and TJA1050, the new products offer a number of advantages over the current generation of HS-CAN transceivers. These include enhanced CAN functionality, improved performance, greater reliability, environmentally friendly packaging and reduced system costs. Both products have been approved by major European and North American car manufacturers and are available for sampling and volume production as of today.
Designed for HS-CAN applications up to 1 Mbit/s and developed in collaboration with key players in the automotive industry, NXP’s new transceivers feature extremely low Electromagnetic Emissions (EME) and greater protection against ringing effects. This ensures reliable communications over even the most advanced networks, which feature an ever-increasing number of ECU’s and ever more complex bus topologies. Improved ESD performance (±8kV according to the IEC 61000-4-2 standard) allows manufacturers to build electronic control units without having to incorporate external ESD protection. This makes it possible to reduce overall system costs significantly while continuing to meet the latest ESD requirements. The transceivers disengage from the bus when they are not powered on or are operating in a ‘low power’ mode. This results in extremely low current consumption of as little as 10 mA typical, enabling effective automotive power management with reduced CO2 emissions. Predictable under-voltage behavior simplifies the design of systems that incorporate Start-Stop functionality. Both transceivers are environmentally friendly, being RoHS-compliant and don’t contain any halogenated flame retardants (known as Dark Green).

“These new transceiver products from NXP enable our customers to introduce greener, safer and more reliable cars with reduced system costs”, said Toni Versluijs, Senior Director and General Manager CAN/LIN Transceivers, NXP Semiconductors

Fully ISO 11898-2 compliant, the transceivers have been qualified to the appropriate Automotive Electronics Council (AEC) standard Q100 and are suitable for use in automotive applications. Furthermore, dedicated processes such as Design for Excellence have been employed to ensure a very low level of returns and high production yields from the first product shipments onwards.

With more than 30 products, NXP has the broadest transceiver portfolio on the market and supplies millions of transceivers to over a hundred direct customers every week. Such a broad customer base coupled with high volume production guarantees a sustainable supply and ensures that TJA1042 and TJA1051 customers will benefit from NXP's long-term commitment to increasing productivity and quality.
