Bluetooth smart module works with or without host MCU
A full-featured, Bluetooth 4.1 compliant smart module that comes equipped with an integrated Bluetooth Low-Energy (BTLE) stack, onboard support for common SIG low-energy profiles is pre-loaded with Microchip’s Low-energy Data Profile (MLDP).The RN4020 Bluetooth Low- Energy Module builds on Microchip’s deep Bluetooth (BT) Classic experience.
It carries both worldwide regulatory certifications and is Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) certified. The MLDP functionality enables designers to easily stream any type of data across the BTLE link.
Mouser Electronics is now selling the complete stack-on-board module. The device can connect to any microcontroller using a UART command interface, and it can also operate as a stand-alone device. The module includes a Bluetooth Low-Energy (BTLE) stack, a built-in PCB antenna, and all standard BT SIG profiles, including Microchip’s Low-energy Data Profile (MLDP).
All of the programmable profiles are stored and selectable on the module, and even private services can be created. Having the RN4020 integrated with the BTLE stack and onboard SIG and MLDP profiles not only speeds time to market, but also aids designers in ensuring Bluetooth compatibility.
Transmit power for the smart module is rated at 7.0 dBm (typical), and the RX sensitivity is rated at -92.5 dBm. By combining the RF, baseband controller and command API processor, the RN4020 is truly a fully-integrated Bluetooth Low-Energy Solution.
The module includes all of the hardware, software and certifications needed to easily add Bluetooth connectivity to any wireless or Internet of Things (IoT) design. Applications for the RN4020 include Smart Energy/Smart Home appliances and automation; health and medical devices; toys, tags, fobs and remote controls; pulse and proximity sensor-based systems; industrial control; and wearable smart devices and accessories.
