Micro-USB Terrapin Launched At DVD 2012
Amphenol Ltd will be launching its latest MICRO-USB TERRAPIN connector Series at DVD 2012. The highly successful Terrapin connector Series launched at the DVD 2010 exhibition is now complemented by the new generation Micro-USB interface designed especially for harsh environment soldier communication systems.
ThisMicro-USB technology was developed by the USB Implementers Forum, and now replaces the majority of Mini-USB connections for equipment such as PDAs and Smartphones. The specification of the Micro-USB supports the current USB On-The-Go supplement and provides total mobile interconnectivity by enabling portable devices to communicate directly with each other without the need for a host computer.
By incorporating Micro-USB technology into the renowned Terrapin connector Amphenol Ltd can offer advantages of increased durability and reliability for USB data transmission in harsh environment applications. The shell design of the Terrapin Series also ensures blind-mating of receptacle to plug and IP68 sealing in both mated and un-mated conditions which eliminates ingress of moisture and dust through the interface.
Available in various RoHS compliant plating finishes the Terrapin Micro-USB connectors are suitable for both military and industrial applications.
Other key features of the product include a high degree of robustness including crush resistance resulting from the toughened brass shell material and excellent grounding / EMI screening. Furthermore, the utilisation of brass provides an increased number of mating cycles (2000) when compared with standard aluminium connectors.
Jam nut Terrapin connectors are available with either a Micro-B plug or Micro-AB receptacle insert and feature a grounding post on the shell for screening as well as a PCB board for termination.
The mating connectors are available either individually or pre-terminated onto overmoulded cable assemblies to the customers’ requirements. The Terrapin Micro-USB connector retains the high performance features from the Terrapin Series and allows the same plug connector to mate to either a latching or push-pull receptacle.
The Micro-USB Series conforms to High Speed USB 2.0 specification. Available as over moulded cable assemblies with ruggedised USB cable, 5 different keying options are offered within a miniature footprint of just 16mm Ø.
Plug connectors are intermateable with standard COTS Micro-USB connectors and cable assemblies. In addition, this Series provides exceptional environmental features including a temperature range of -55°C to +85°C, IP68 sealing for 1hr @ 2m immersion, 1000hrs salt spray, and full RoHS compliance.
Typical applications for this product range include battlefield communications, soldier systems, ruggedised computers, PDAs and GPS devices as well as handheld equipment and data storage for harsh environments.
