Shortlist announcement: Analog Devices – The ADTF3175

The ADTF3175 is the first high-resolution, industrial quality, indirect Time-of-Flight (ToF) module for 3D depth sensing and vision systems.

The module delivers a turnkey, scalable system that provides high-accuracy and robustness over variable environmental conditions. Moreover, the module abstracts the burden of optical and electromechanical system design and delivers a fully engineered and calibrated depth system to designers allowing them to concentrate on bringing new 3D sensing and vision systems to the market. It builds on the collaboration between Analog Devices and Microsoft to deliver the highest resolution 3D depth sensing module to the broad market.

Time-of-Flight technology is complex to implement for typical customers. It requires capabilities in optical, mechanical, and high-speed electrical design, combined with sophisticated system engineering expertise and supply-chain breadth around chip-on-board, optics, etc. The result of this complexity has limited the access to this ground-breaking technology. Current high quality depth cameras that are custom engineered tend to be expensive. The goal of the ADTF3175 is to democratise the access to high-performance (ToF) to the broadest base of users while bringing to bear Analog Devices expertise and understanding of the industrial market with respect to technical challenges, quality, and product lifetime.

Shortlist announcement: Analog Devices – The ADMT4000

The ADMT4000 is the world’s first single chip Multiturn position sensor and operates without power or contact.

There are many single-turn 360° absolute position sensors on the market today, but the ADMT4000 is the first single chip sensor with an absolute measurement range of 360°. The sensor IC incorporates a GMR based spiral multiturn sensor, an AMR angle sensor, a signal conditioning IC and has a 46-turn measurement range providing an absolute 0° to 16,560° digital output. The sensor is non-contacting and has the unique ability to measure and track multiple turns of a rotating magnetic field in the absence of electrical power.

The sensor is non-contacting and has the unique ability to measure and track multiple turns of a rotating magnetic field in the absence of electrical power. The operating principle of the sensor is based on Shape Anisotropy, the generation of domain walls in the presence of an external magnetic field. As the external magnetic field rotates, the domain walls propagate through narrow spiral tracks (nanowires) changing the state of each spiral leg element. The spiral elements are fabricated on a Giant Magneto Resistance (GMR) process and the state change is essentially a change in the resistance in the presence of a rotating magnetic field.

The multiturn sensor tracks the movement of the rotating magnetic field without electrical power and when power is reapplied, the signal conditioning IC reads back the state (resistance) of the GMR spiral legs and determines the new turn count state. The multiturn sensor is accurate to a quarter turn (90°) and the ASIC combines the multiturn position with precise angle information from the AMR angle sensor to provide the 0° to 16,560° absolute digital output and is accurate to +/-0.25° over the complete measurement range.

Shortlist announcement: Onsemi – Ride Vision

Ride Vision is an industry-leading collision avoidance solution designed for two and three wheeled vehicles to keep riders safe on the road.

This is a collaboration between onsemi and Ride Vision, an Israel-based startup. The Ride Vision system uses in its cameras the onsemi Hayabusa (AR0147AT) image sensors, along with an onboard processing unit, where a patented algorithm is used to detect and notify riders of collision threats in real time.

While most modern vehicles have been incorporating safety features and functionality, this is not true of motorcycles – not withstanding that the chances of a fatality in a motorcycle accident are approximately 30 times higher than in a car.

Protective gear such as helmets, jackets, and boots can, at best, only protect riders during the event; they cannot prevent accidents from happening in the first place. It’s time that riders of 2 and 3-wheeled vehicles are afforded the same degree of safety options as motorists are.

Shortlist announcement: Weidmueller Interface – SNAP-IN

SNAP-IN is the latest innovation in connection technology. A conductor is inserted into the terminal's connection point and the mechanism snaps shut thanks to the mousetrap principle.

A clearly audible click of the clamping yoke signals that the connection has been made – completely without tools. The SNAP-IN technology guarantees a safe and permanently reliable contact – even with increasingly automated wiring processes of the future.

In the end position, the patented clamping mechanism closes automatically. This is achieved by the integrated mousetrap principle, which is triggered fully automatically and reliably as soon as the conductor is inserted correctly and deep enough into the contact point. This makes it practically maintenance-free.

The connection is secure and vibration-proof. By simply operating the lever or pusher, the connection point can be opened again, and the connected conductor can be removed. At the same time, the Visual Safety Indicator moves back to its original position. The connection is ready to use again.
