Inertial sensors measure how a vehicle turns and accelerates. This makes them useful for a wide range of tasks. By transferring the sensor technology that it developed for passenger cars and commercial vehicles to agricultural vehicles and their accessory equipment, Continental is able to offer attractive solutions that are optimized for these applications.
The sensors continuously gather key data on the vehicle’s motion, thus enabling the electronic system to monitor its state. The system measures the angular velocity on each axis (pitch, roll and yaw) as well as the acceleration along each axis (vertical, transverse and longitudinal). The data are sent to other control units via CAN using the standard J1939 protocol.

With the help of these data, a vehicle can be guided much more safely in critical situations. On steep slopes, for example, the sensor unit detects the risk of tipping at an early stage. Besides being integrated in vehicles, the sensors can be used in agricultural equipment, where they provide feedback to automatic machine control systems.

Continental was the first company in the world to combine inertial sensors in a single central component. In integrating the sensors, the challenge was to prevent frequency interference and signal crosstalk between them. Continental used silicon sensors to achieve greater robustness against resonance and vibrations. Another advantage is resistance to ambient temperatures of up to 125°C. Qualities such as these are essential for agricultural vehicles, which must operate reliably in demanding environments.

At the Agritechnica Continental is presenting the Inertial sensors as well as a broad product portfolio for agricultural vehicles. The booth is in Hall 26 on the court H07.
