In the most recent instalment of the Vicor Powering Innovation podcast, the topic of electrification was thoroughly examined through a conversation with Lightning Motorcycles

This firm stands out for crafting the swiftest electric motorbike globally. Beyond its speed, Lightning Motorcycles commits to providing a ride devoid of any vibrations, ensuring a pure and seamless experience for enthusiasts who cherish the essence of motorcycling.

Richard Hatfield, the Founder, and CEO of Lightning Motorcycles, described the unique experience the motorcycle offers: “The bike gives you a feeling of limitless torque with no vibration, no noise and no heat – there is almost a magical feeling to it.”

In a conversation with David Krakauer, the Vice President of Corporate Marketing at Vicor, Hatfield delved into his journey and the ways in which Lightning has managed to develop a motorcycle superior in nearly every respect.

Situated in San Jose, California, Lightning Motorcycles has emerged as a frontrunner in the electric motorcycle sector globally. Hatfield highlighted the main hurdles the company confronts, namely packaging, weight, and thermal management, especially when juxtaposed with motorcycles powered by internal combustion engines (ICE). Through advanced engineering, Lightning has succeeded in maintaining the weight of its electric vehicles (EVs) at around 200lbs, equivalent to that of its ICE counterparts.

Noteworthy is Lightning’s achievement in setting a land speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah and securing a victory in the Pike Peaks challenge in Denver, which boasts an elevation of 14,115ft. However, Hatfield expressed greater pride in the motorcycle’s unmatched riding experience than in these accolades.
