Delphi to Launch New Diesel Particulate Filters Program with OE Filter Technology to Help Maintain Emissions Standards in the Aftermarket
In compliance with European emissions standards, Delphi Automotive will launch a new diesel particulate filter (DPF) program featuring a filtration and regeneration process to help reduce CO2 emissions, while maintaining vehicle performance. Delphi’s range of direct-fit DPFs features an OE quality filter/ trap, unique material construction, and is supported by a complete diagnostics and service support program for the aftermarket. In addition to the filter/trap, some Delphi DPF applications will include a catalytic converter replicating the original equipment in the aftermarket.
As eThe DPF filter is produced from silicon carbide, and is durable to allow for multiple regeneration cycles, critical to the longevity of green performing diesel engines. Some DPF filters also feature a wash coat of precious metals to support and assist in the regeneration process. The DPF filter construction is designed with channels that are closed at opposite ends, however the cell walls are porous and allow the gasses to permeate the cell walls whilst retaining the solid soot matter in the filter/trap. When the sensors in the DPF register a drop in pressure, the ECU activates a regeneration cycle burning away the soot collected on the filter cell walls.
Leaking injectors, incorrect fuel pressure and blocked sensors can contribute to premature DPF failure and may also contribute to the failure of related components, such as the ECU, EGR valves, turbo, oxygen sensors and fuel delivery. Capitalizing on extensive knowledge of diesel technologies and the ability to service these systems, Delphi’s network will offer a full diagnostic and service solution.
Delphi’s DS diagnostic tool will support trained diesel technicians with diesel particulate fault diagnosis. The software capabilities for DPF’s include system regeneration, additive replenishment and fault clearing with pressure sensor reset. These are featured in the DS package providing technicians an applicable guide to steer them toward a successful diagnostic and repair.
Forced regeneration is critical if a vehicle’s DPF system is blocked due to urban drive cycles. Many passenger vehicles do not achieve the required system temperature during normal operation to enable automatic regeneration. A blocked system scenario usually results in a check engine light on the dashboard. The Delphi DS diagnostic tool can enable the forced regeneration process (engine temperature, speed and load required), whilst also providing the technician an opportunity to diagnose the fuel system, as any malfunctions with the fuel system will affect the DPF performance. Dynamic data is a function within the software so real time system parameters can be monitored.
Delphi will provide a technical hotline to help save garages in diagnostic time, under bonnet troubleshooting and unnecessary parts replacement. Workshop, classroom based and webinar training courses have also been developed to educate network installers on the importance of correct maintenance and service techniques for the DPF systems.
In addition to consistently developing products for the aftermarket ahead of future regulation standards, we must also provide the diagnostic services and training to accurately troubleshoot vehicles that come in for routine maintenance or service, said Desnos. Our program will help promote vehicle health checks for potential fuel infection and failing emissions systems.
The initial launch covers popular applications such as Peugeot 307, 807 and Citroën C5, as well as Mazda 6 and Ford Focus.. Additional expansion initiatives are scheduled throughout 2011 and 2012.
