Industry’s first backside illumination image sensor

OmniVision Technologies has announced what the company claims to be the automotive industry’s first backside illumination (BSI) image sensor and a powerful companion processing chip. The OV10640 BSI sensor offers high dynamic range of up to 120dB in highly compact automotive-grade packages.

Enabling high-quality image and video processing, the OV490 is a companion processor that enables simultaneous output of fully processed YUV or RGB data for display-based applications. It also enables RAW data for machine-vision downstream processing. Advanced ISP allows high-quality image capture and video streaming, while a unique architecture can process two video pipelines, reducing BOM costs.

OmniVision has claimed that the OV10640 is the first automotive image sensor built on OmniBSI technology. This enables high sensitivity to capture highly detailed, full-resolution 1.3MP images and video at 60FPS. The sensor minimises motion artifacts, facilitating clear scene reproduction with up to 120dB dynamic range with RAW output.

Expected to complete AEC-Q100 Grade-2 qualification in Q4 2014, the OV10640 and OV490 provide crisp, clear images and video for next-gen advanced driver assistance systems across a range of vehicle platforms.
