What problem does the tech industry face in terms of recruitment?

It has been several years now that there has been a huge challenge in recruiting in the technology industry. The number of technology professionals required outweighs the number of people with the relevant skills, leaving a major shortage that companies are struggling with.

Both recruitment agencies and in-house recruitment teams have been facing significant recruitment problems, as there simply aren’t enough skilled workers available. Due to these problems, this has led companies to offer improved salary and benefits packages to try and tempt highly skilled technology experts into their specific roles.

Of course, as soon as one company does that, all their competition has to do the same. However, this means technology experts with skills that are in high demand can negotiate much better packages than many other sectors.

The pace at which technology has advanced is a key reason behind this shortage. The education system is struggling to keep up-to-date and is unable to predict what the current job market will look like in years to come. Recently, the government has addressed some of the concerns by adding subject areas like web development coding to the curriculum. However, it will still be some years before the students taking these subjects will be looking for jobs.

Anyone who has a background in technology or an aptitude for anything technology-based, this gap in the recruitment market proves to be a real opportunity for moving into an area of technology that offers a great package. This is the time for the tech-savvy.

The trends in recruitment look like they will continue to be highly influenced by technology, both regarding jobs created by newly developed technology, or becoming obsolete due to the advancements. Many of the manual tasks that people used to do have been replaced by automated systems, with companies preferring to offer their services online rather than offline, such as sites like Show Case Creative who opts for an international audience, as opposed to buying a store and opening literal doors.

Other examples include banks, where customers prefer to check their bank statements online and make transactions on computers and phones. This eliminates the middle man, as there is no need to walk into a branch and speak to an employee anymore. Brexit is another problem that will impact the recruitment of technology experts. For a start, the EU may be able to offer better salaries and packages to those currently working in the UK. The exchange rate is already causing problems for companies that trade outside of the UK as they are now paying more for services or products from outside the UK. Therefore, skilled workers are more likely to be tempted to leave as they will be able to live a better lifestyle.

Although there are current issues within the technology sector regarding recruitment, this advancement in technology also ensures there will always be a rise in jobs. Due to the high demand, people who are contemplating study also have options such as apprenticeships or internships to consider, where they offer onsite training and potential full-time work once completion.
