Toshiba announces free resources to simplify development of ARM-based LINUX systems

Incorporating Board Support Packages (BSPs), drivers and software, the resources from kernel concepts are targeted at applications built on Toshiba’s TMPA9xx family of microcontrollers. They can also be used to speed development of applications based on the ARM9 CPU module from specialist distributor Glyn. Through access to these resources, and the professional engineering support offered by kernel concepts, even engineers with little or no previous LINUX experience can rapidly implement LINUX systems - leaving them more time to concentrate on the application-specific aspects of their designs.

Toshiba’s TMPA9xx family of microcontrollers feature a 32-bit ARM926EJ-S core and offer a variety of peripherals and interfaces that make them ideal for industrial multimedia and human machine interface (HMI) applications. The new BSPs are designed for use with the respective microcontroller Starter Kits and provide a complete environment for building the LINUX system. Packages include the LINUX kernel, bootloader and ready-made root file system images.

In addition to the BSPs, a variety of support and software, including common device drivers and ready-made application demonstrations, is available from the kernel concepts website at http://tx09linux.kernelconcepts.de. Additionally to the free services on the website, kernel concepts offers commercial support services for designers and engineers, from pre-development consulting to in-depth device driver and application development.

Supporting the same kernel and bootloader for all Starter Kits allows simultaneous updates when changes are made. Kernel concepts hosts the kernel and bootloader free and open source code on a publicly accessible GIT server to ensure that users can clearly see what changes have been made and the reason for those changes.

To help engineers get the most from their LINUX development, Toshiba Electronics Europe and Glyn will be holding a LINUX Symposium at Toshiba’s Düsseldorf offices on 8th and 9th February 2011. The German-language event will provide embedded system developers with in-depth information on designing and implementing LINUX-based systems and will include practical demonstrations and application examples. Attendees at the Symposium will also have the opportunity to purchase microcontroller starter kits, reference boards and development tools at reduced prices.
