STMicroelectronics announced that it has won a prestigious ‘Sesames Award’ in the ‘Production & Test’ category for its UTAMCIC (UHF TAG Antenna Magnetically Coupled to Integrated Circuit) project. The highly innovative UTAMCIC project has delivered a proof-of-concept R&D demonstrator solution for semiconductor production that can be applied to a wide range of applications. The solution uses a single-metal-layer UHF antenna on a plastic flexible support that is magnetically coupled to an integrated circuit, meaning that chip functionality can be wirelessly tested, improving manufacturing efficiency and product quality.
Organized as part of the Cartes and IDentification 2010 show, the Sesames Awards are the world reference for smartcard manufacturers and an undisputed label of innovation.

An independent jury of recognized international experts in the card and identification industry determines the winner in each award category. One winner was selected in each of the 10 categories, out of 395 candidates.

On Monday December 6, 2010, the UTAMCIC project leaders received the award during an official ceremony held at the Automobile Club of France in Paris. The project leaders of UTAMCIC are Alberto Pagani, Giovanni Girlando and Alessandro Finocchiaro from STMicroelectronics, and Professor Giuseppe Palmisano from the University of Catania.

“The prestigious ‘SESAMES Award’ is an important validation of ST’s commitment to provide a reliable and cost-effective solution for testing a wide range of applications,” said ST’s UTAMCIC project leader. “We are delighted with the committee’s selection of the UTAMCIC project – this award confirms our efforts to continuously improve our production and test technology for an even better service for ST’s customers.”
