Spirent Communications plc, in its continuing role as a leader in network, services and device testing, played a critical part in the industry’s first live interconnection carrier Ethernet demonstration conducted at the Ethernet Expo: Europe 2009 Conference and Expo.
Dubbed the Global Interconnect Demonstration (GID), the event involved interconnecting Carrier Ethernet services as defined by the MEF (Metro Ethernet Forum) as well as core and access Ethernet switches that enable these services. Spirent supported the following GID demonstration initiatives:

* Measured performance of live interconnected Carrier Ethernet between a number of global service providers

* Validated next generation implementations of protocols and services from multiple core and access switch vendors interoperating together

* Ran high-bandwidth applications, such as global interactive video services, over circuits interconnecting from the show floor to sites around the world

The GID designer and organizer, Iometrix, a recognized and trusted certification test lab for MEF-defined Carrier Ethernet, selected Spirent VQA (Video Quality Analyzer) on the Spirent TestCenter to:

* Emulate high-bandwidth, interactive video services over a live, interconnected global network

* Assess real-time Quality of Service (QoS) delivery of video services at several network end points

* Generate Quality of Experience (QoE) reports summarizing video behavior from hundreds of video quality metrics

“We are very pleased to see Spirent participate in the Global Interconnect Demo and demonstrate HDTV broadcast quality video transmitting directly from the demo show floor in London to Frankfurt on a trans-European Carrier Ethernet circuit,” said Bob Mandeville, president of Iometrix. “By combining video generation and real-time analysis, Spirent provided the many visitors to the demo with both visual and analytical evidence of the exceptional level of service quality delivered on the long-reach demo interconnected Ethernet service.”

“Demonstrating to global services providers and network equipment a complete picture for video quality over a global interconnected network was an exciting way for Spirent to showcase our leading video test solution.” said Jack Douglass, Director of Video Technology at Spirent Communications. “Event participants witnessed the impact of video testing and how Spirent is able to help advance their delivery of video services.”

Spirent VQA for Spirent TestCenter combines the comprehensive Layer 2-7 performance capabilities with deep video analysis capabilities supporting hundreds of IPTV QoS/QoE metrics such as program information, perceptual quality, network, MDI, content, frame statistics, video scene analysis and ETSI TR101-290.
