M.E. Baker Brings SmartAutoTM to Your iPhone, iPod or iPad

Prosoft Technology Inc. developed an app for these devices that M.E. Baker has integrated into its control systems. SmartAutoTM wirelessly connects directly to the programmable logic controller (PLC) without routing through servers or personal computers, using direct TCP/IP links between an Apple device and the control systems’ PLC. Security is guaranteed through extensive use of passwords as well as the encryption and tunneling options that the TCP/IP and 802.11 technologies provide.

ProSoft iView displays live values in stylized lists and includes user-established variance allowances with alarms, including local notifications. Controls and data displays are color-coded based on the value. Engineers can monitor these variables in real-time and make adjustments on-the-fly from any of these devices. This also is an invaluably helpful tool for maintenance personnel who can have the data they need in hand to troubleshoot controls and devices on the machine even from remote locations, making it possible to diagnose problems before leaving the maintenance shop.

SmartAutoTM includes a Wi-Fi access point in the control system plus all necessary custom PLC programming and configuration files needed by the ProSoft app to interface with the control system and instructions to set up a device, modify and create menus and add users.

Live PLC data can be viewed and changed through local (802.11/WiFi) or remote cellular enhanced security using the device’s built-in 802.11 WAP/WAP2 256 bit encryption. Additional features include multi-user level accounts — if the username and password are not known, access is denied; live trending that allows users to trend and graph live tag values based on one, two and 10 minute intervals; and the ability to interface to multiple machines on the same device for plant-wide automation control. The device also can be used as a barcode reader (if this feature is required in your control system).
