Local Energy Appliances (LEA), a start-up company specialising on smart systems and solutions for electrical grids in developing countries, has joined IAR Systems' Green Innovation Program. IAR's sponsor programme supports development projects in eco-friendly technology. As part of the programme LEA has been provided with free licences of IAR Embedded Workbench for ARM.

LEA designs technology for developing countries worldwide that help to increase reliability, availability and safety of energy supply at a much lower cost than conventional technologies. The economic and social progress of rural and urban areas in Africa, Asia and Latin America rely on the development of infrastructure. A metering and billing system designed to work in challenging environments and without pre-existing communication infrastructure is among LEA's projects. This system, combined with the company's mini-grid and zoning control systems, enables distributed, reliable and economical control of electricity generation and distribution. The company are currently organising the first pilot projects which are to take place in Kenya and Cameroon.

Members of the IAR Green Innovation Program are awarded with up to $25,000 worth of IAR Embedded Workbench or IAR visualSTATE licences for the duration of the project. Organisations working in the areas of environmental monitoring, renewable and clean energy systems, systems that optimise energy efficiency, recycling, climate-related disaster recovery, and green quality of life improvements for people in developing and third-world countries can apply to become a member of IAR Green Innovation Program. The organisation could be a research centre, a university programme or a startup company with 10 or less employees.

“IAR Green Innovation Program has helped us to speed up our development in a phase where we needed it most,” says Jakob Gärtner, Founder and Managing Director, Local Energy Appliances. “IAR Embedded Workbench has an intuitive user interface and creates very efficient object code, which helps us to use the very constrained hardware resources of the platform. Integration of the first working prototype was just a matter of days, which helped us to prepare the first pilot projects very quickly.”

“Within the framework of IAR Green Innovation Program, we support the greenest and most sustainable-thinking entrepreneurs with our world-leading development tools”, says Andreas Thomas, Sales Manager Germany, IAR Systems. “Local Energy Appliances deserves to be supported as their innovation projects have a huge potential of improving life for people who need it the most.”
