Derek Boyd, CEO of the National Microelectronics Institute (NMI) has been elected as Chairman of the UK Electronics Alliance (UKEA). Formed in 2006, the UKEA is a grouping of the major trade associations within the electronics sector. Boyd replaces Ashley Evans who becomes CEO of the Electronics Knowledge Transfer Network (Electronics KTN).
Speaking of his appointment, Boyd said, “The UKEA has proved its worth in a very short space of time and I’m proud to take up the Chair. The Alliance provides a tremendous platform for reviewing the common problems and opportunities faced by all sectors of the electronics community – not just microelectronics - and there’s a real power to its collective voice.”

The Alliance successfully coordinated the proposal for the creation of the Electronics KTN. Subsequently approved by the DTI, the Network launches in May 2007 with the assurance of £3m of funding over 3 years.

Boyd continued, “The Electronics KTN is just the first of what we hope will be many major achievements by the UKEA. Industry skills are the next major issue the Alliance will tackle and we’ll be aiming to encourage fresh new talent to enter engineering and to provide greater support for continuous professional development. We will be recruiting an Alliance Executive in the very near future to help us drive forward this and other key initiatives.”

Boyd’s first job as Chairman was to welcome EMCIA as a new member of the Alliance. The UKEA membership includes the following:

AFDEC - Association of the Franchised Distributors of Electronic Components
AIM UK – Association for Automatic Identification and Mobile Data Capture
COG - Component Obsolescence Group Electronics Scotland
EMCIA – The Electromagnetic Compatibility Industry Association
GAMBICA - Association for Instrumentation, Control, Automation and Laboratory Technology
IABM - International Association of Broadcasting Manufacturers
Intellect - The Trade Association for the UK hi-tech industry
JEMI UK – The Joint Equipment and Materials Initiative
NMI – The Trade Association for the microelectronics industry in UK & Ireland Welsh Electronics Forum
