The National Microelectronics Institute (NMI), the trade association representing the semiconductor industry in the UK and Ireland, has picked up two awards at the annual Trade Association Forum Best Practice Awards held in London on 10th July. The NMI won the categories for ‘Membership Success’ and ‘Environmental Initiative’.
In the Membership Success category, the judges were especially impressed by the fact that the NMI had successfully attracted large numbers of SMEs to its membership. They also noted that the NMI had engaged academia in the development of its series of Network events to create greater opportunities for knowledge transfer.
The NMI’s CEO Derek Boyd said, “The membership award is tremendous acknowledgement of the effort that the NMI has put into uniting all of the UK’s different semiconductor communities. We’ve increased our membership significantly in recent years and it really does now cover the complete industry spectrum, from early stage start-ups through to global IDMs.”
In the Environmental Initiative category, an NMI study of air conditioning energy efficiency at members’ wafer fabrication plants was a unanimous choice of the judges. Supported by funding from The Carbon Trust and the wafer fab operators, the study identified opportunities to reduce CO2 emissions by more than 40,000 tonnes and achieve average savings of 10% of total site emissions. The judges felt that other trade associations could apply the NMI’s approach to their own industry sectors to attain the same benefits.
Now in their fifth year, the Trade Association Forum Best Practice Awards aim to foster the search for excellence, recognise and reward achievement and encourage the communication of best practice. This year’s awards attracted over 130 entries from 52 different trade associations.
