The National Microelectronics institute (NMI), the trade association representing the semiconductor industry in the UK and Ireland, has announced a 50% increase in its membership in little over a year. The University of Southampton has just become the NMI’s 150th member.
Established in 1996 as a not-for-profit organisation completely funded by its members, the NMI has grown rapidly to embrace the entire microelectronics supply chain. Its membership today includes fabless semiconductor manufacturers, IDMs, foundries, design services, IP providers, EDA tool providers and research and academic institutions.

Derek Boyd, CEO, NMI said, “Our clear aim from the outset has always been to help to build and support a strong UK microelectronics community, by acting as a real catalyst for commercial and technological development, and I passionately believe that this tremendous rise in membership demonstrates that we’re achieving our goal.”

“Our last three new members in fact are very representative of the complete cross section of industry we are now working with and all are at the cutting edge of microelectronics technology: the University of Southampton, one of our top 10 research universities, with a growing portfolio of spin-out companies; SiGe Semiconductor, a real innovator in next-generation wireless ICs; and Korusys, a design consultancy with a tremendous pedigree in ASIC and FPGA system and software development.”
