Microchip Technology in talks to buy Microsemi
Consolidation in the semiconductor industry looks set to continue with news that Microchip Technology is set to buy Microsemi, per the Wall Street Journal. Talks between the two companies are continuing so no deal has been struck yet.
California-based Microsemi offers a portfolio of semiconductor and system solutions for aerospace & defence, communications, data centre and industrial markets.
Products include high-performance and radiation-hardened analogue mixed-signal integrated circuits, FPGAs, SoCs and ASICs; power management products; timing and synchronisation devices and precise time solutions, setting the world’s standard for time; voice processing devices; RF solutions; discrete components; enterprise storage and communication solutions, security technologies and scalable anti-tamper products; Ethernet solutions; Power-over-Ethernet ICs and midspans; as well as custom design capabilities and services.
The company has approximately 4,800 employees globally.
Embedded solutions provider Microchip has made a series of acquisitions, most recently it bought Atmel in 2016, Micrel in 2015 and Supertex in 2014.
Both companies have Arrow and Digi-Key as global distributors. Microsemi also sells through Future Electronics, Mouser and Richardson RFPD, and has Solid State Supplies as a local distributor in the UK and Ireland.
Microchip has Avnet, Farnell element14 and RS Components on its global roster and Ineltek as a regional distributor in Europe.
