Renesas Technology Europe has been selected by LG Electronics to provide its DRACO2D digRF EDGE RF chipsets for LGE’s latest multimedia phones. DRACO2D offers a very integrated solution, simplifying the use of EDGE RF in the phone and featuring auto calibration mechanism to ensure fast time to market.
Renesas was the first supplier to develop the polar loop architecture for EDGE, which has proven its robustness even under severe field condition in millions of phones in the world. This second generation makes a further step in silicon integration to enable a small PCB size, all RF in one shield and a very low external components count. The high data rate delivered with the polar loop technology provides a leading user experience for streaming audio, video and new mobile Internet contents on mobile phones.
Stéphane Catala, RF Marketing Manager in Renesas Technology Europe commented “With our latest digRF solution, we offer handset makers a best in class EDGE RF solution, easy to use and featuring a high efficiency to optimise the phone talk time.

The cooperation between Renesas and the baseband supplier results in an efficient system support for LGE to reduce time to market for the phone. We are proud to see our RF chipset powering the very fashionable LGE multimedia phone line-up”.

DRACO2D demonstrates Renesas expertise in polar loop transceiver and HPA integration. The solution is composed of a digRF transceiver housed in a very small 5 x 5mm package, a high efficiency polar loop HPA in 7 x 7mm module and a plug-and-play SAW front-end module. The polar loop calibration is achieved by a patented auto calibration mechanism that removes the need for measurement equipment on the production line. The digRF standard compliancy ensures a simple baseband interface and a wide compatibility to available basebands on the market.
