GestureAware has launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for their first product, Cogniturn. This is a helmet-mounted direction indicator system for cyclists that is activated by a gentle and intuitive flick of the head to the left or right - enabling cyclists to keep their hands firmly on the handlebars at all times, resulting in better control, balance and safety.

Currently at the prototype stage, Cogniturn uses a built-in motion sensor and high-powered amber LED lights which can be attached on either side of the helmet. Cogniturn is designed with the cyclist's comfort and safety in mind.

According to the results of the recent poll by the BBC, 52% of respondents agree with the statement that it is “too dangerous to cycle on the roads in my local area”. This view supported by the tragic accident statistics, especially in the dense urban areas such as London.

As a result 69% of respondents said that they had not ridden in the past 12 months and only 5% ride a bicycle between two and five times a week.

GestureAware firmly believes that road safety is a shared responsibility. Michal Harasimiuk, Founder, GestureAware said "Being seen is only half the battle us cyclists face - the other major factor is being understood by and predictable to other road users. That's why we're so excited to have launched this Kickstarter campaign in the hope that people back our idea and vision for safer roads within our cities. Making a traditional turn signal by extending one's hand, is often difficult enough in busy traffic or in wet or low visibility conditions. When you are faced with obstacles or pot holes which you need to avoid at the same moment, it can turn a challenge into a serious accident. We feel that by enabling cyclists to keep their hands firmly on the handlebars and using our intuitive solution, we can help cars and cyclist live happier together on our roads."
