A disposable temperature logging foil demonstrator for cold chain monitoring has been developed by NXP and Enfucell. According to the NXP, the loggers currently used for cold chain monitoring are inadequate. Chemical temperature loggers can only detect simple cold chain excursion and do not indicate when the event occurred, while reusable electronic loggers can only be deployed at pallet level.

The NHS3100, which is a single chip solution for temperature logging, features an accurate temperature sensor, an NFC interface, an accurate time reference, a non-volatile temperature logging memory and a programmable Cortex M0+ processor. This programmable architecture offers biopharmaceutical manufacturers the option to define a product-specific temperature excursion limit profile. The more elaborate profile minimises product waste, while the internal time reference offers traceability across the logistics chain of exposure beyond excursion limits. The embedded NFC interface allows users to view the product’s status at any point in the logistic chain via an FC-enabled smart phone or reader.

Enfucell’s battery is a thin, flexible and eco-friendly power source which can be printed onto the flexible foil. The disposable temperature logging foil has a shelf life of one year and an operating life of two years.
