China Mobile Completes 'The Green Roof of the World' Project
China Mobile, the world's leading telecommunication operator, completed 'The Green Roof of the World' project. Solar energy and wind power are available now in at least 1,000 power sites in western China, at an average height of 4,000 meters above sea level. Compared with coal-fired power plants, 4400 tons of standard coal are saved each year with a corresponding reduction of SO2 92.8 tons, 14504 tons of CO2 emissions, and 1080 tons of soot.
ThisThe vast territory, inhospitable hinterland and harsh natural conditions in this region posed multiple difficulties for typical power construction. Take environmental protection as the top considerations, China Mobile and Huawei determined to develop green products for the roof of the world at the end of 2004. The solar powered sites were built with the assistance of Huawei engineers on the world's highest peak, Mount Everest. Because of these sites, the mountaineers could have the life saving communication. Remote towns and villages are now connected to the outside world .Information like health and education are accessible now.
By the end of 2008, no less than 683 villages and towns (over 70 % of the total) had wireless connectivity, enabling access to the Internet world and its benefits. By the end of June 2009, 1,156 solar power sites had been built on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, forming the world's largest solar power site group. Nearly 80% of the 1,000 BTS sites in this area are using solar power now. The installed solar power capacity of China Mobile in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau totals 10,000 kilowatts, with an annual generation capacity of approximately 20 million kWh.
This year, China Mobile enlarged the application scope of solar and wind power by building an additional 1,000 solar power sites. What' s more, China Mobile will conduct advanced research on the wind/solar and mains hybrid power supply systems, piloting new sources of power such as fuel cells, small hydro power, and terrestrial heat.
Together with Huawei and other industry chain partner, China Mobile will continue to implement the Green Action Plan, committing to create a green industry chain of mobile communications.
