Altera today announced it will feature the advantages of its field programmable gate array (FPGA) technologies for next-generation automotive systems at the SAE Convergence 2012 in Detroit, Michigan.
Demonstrations will include the use of Altera’s low-power, low-cost Cyclone FPGAs, which deliver the cost, performance and power advantages of programmable technology optimized for automotive applications.

Event: Altera technology demonstrations at SAE Convergence 2012

Date: October 16-17, 2012

Location: Cobo Conference and Exhibition Center, Detroit, Michigan, Booth #507

Altera technology experts will be on hand to discuss how the company’s automotive solutions offer a scalable processing platform, unlike ASICs and ASSPs/MCUs, to provide system designers with the flexibility necessary to meet the demands of next-generation automotive systems. The evolution of today’s automotive protocols (CAN, LIN, FlexRay, MOST and Ethernet) and the stringent demands placed on automotive systems developers make Altera’s FPGAs and SoC FPGAs an ideal solution for use in automotive systems. Altera’s automotive solutions offer a significant advantage over traditional solutions by allowing developers to respond to market trends while meeting critical cost, performance and power targets. Altera’s FPGAs also accelerate design time and total cost of ownership by integrating embedded processors, custom IP, communication protocols, and I/Os within a single device.

“The competitive and regulatory pressures of today’s global automotive market make it imperative for system designers to be nimble when it comes to incorporating the latest ADAS applications into their vehicles,” said Michael Hendricks, product line manager for the industrial and automotive business unit at Altera. “Increasingly, designers are relying on Altera’s CPLDs, FPGAs, and SoC FPGAs, with integrated ARM Cortex-A9 processors, to deliver innovative products to market quickly.”

Altera’s in-booth demonstrations include:

-Cyclone IV FPGA Rear-view Camera System: A low-cost, single FPGA intelligent rear-view camera system that integrates fisheye correction and high-definition (HD) video analytics

-Radar/Camera Sensor Fusion System: Industry-first FPGA-based radar/camera sensor fusion system, combining 77-GHz radar processing with 720p30 image processing pipeline in a single low-cost Cyclone IV FPGA.

-Forward Looking Stereo Camera System: High-performance, forward-looking stereo camera system with performance up to 160 frames per second and 200m detection range at 100 km/hr.

Altera’s automotive portfolio includes a wide range of devices that meet or exceed TS-16949 and AEC-Q100 standards. To help jump start the design process, Altera also offers unique combination of automotive-grade devices, solutions and development kits. Altera’s product portfolio, IP, tools and tool flow have been certified for IEC 61508 functional safety, helping to save 18-24 months of development time in safety application certification.
