Industry 4.0 was a term coined in 2011 at the Hannover Fair and refers to the fourth industrial revolution. Taking place as far back as the late 18th Century, the first industrial revolution related to the mechanisation of manufacturing. This led to electrification in the early part of the 20th Century (the second industrial revolution).

Computerisation and automation ushered in the third industrial revolution during the 1980s with advancements such as the PC, the internet and information and computer technology (ICT).

The fourth industrial revolution builds on the digital revolution, representing new ways in which technology becomes embedded within different sectors. It is causing a period of rapid change within manufacturing as the industry moves from automated production to full digitisation.

Within Industry 4.0, digital communication forms the backbone of a networked production system. Additional sensors for condition monitoring in gearboxes, rolling bearings and motors optimises the service life of systems and machines, increases productivity and reduces down-time.

The networking of automation systems with the internet increases the transparency of production systems and allows new business models to analyse and process large amounts of data.

To achieve full digitalisation and reap the benefits of Industry 4.0, manufacturers will need the latest technologies in industrial communication, sensors and control. Texas Instruments offer a range of products to meet these needs including:

LM5166: The LM5166 is a compact, easy-to-use, 3V to 65V, ultra-low IQ synchronous buck converter with high efficiency over wide input voltage and load current ranges. With integrated high-side and low-side power MOSFETs, up to 500mA of output current can be delivered at fixed output voltages of 3.3V or 5V, or an adjustable output.

The converter is designed to simplify implementation while providing options to optimise the performance for the target application. Pulse frequency modulation (PFM) mode is selected for optimal light load efficiency or constant on-time (COT) control for nearly constant operating frequency. Both control schemes do not require loop compensation while providing excellent line and load transient response and short PWM on-time for large step-down conversion ratios.

TPS7A39: The TPS7A39 device is a dual, monolithic, high-PSRR, positive and negative low-dropout (LDO) voltage regulator capable of sourcing (and sinking) up to 150mA of current. The regulated outputs can be independently and externally adjusted to symmetrical or asymmetrical voltages, making this device an ideal dual, bipolar power supply for signal conditioning.

Both positive and negative outputs of the TPS7A39 ratiometrically track each other during startup to mitigate floating conditions and other power supply sequencing issues common in dual-rail systems. The negative output can regulate up to 0V, extending the common-mode range for single-supply amplifiers. The TPS7A39 also features high PSRR to eliminate power supply noise, such as switching noise, that can compromise signal integrity.

The wide supply input range of 4.2 to 55V allows control of many popular DC bus voltages. The device can withstand and protect the loads from positive and negative supply voltages up to ±60V.

Integrated back to back FETs provide a reverse current blocking feature making the device suitable for systems with output voltage holdup requirements during power fail and brownout conditions. Load, source and device protection are provided with many adjustable features including overcurrent, output slew rate and overvoltage, undervoltage thresholds. The internal robust protection control blocks along with the high voltage rating of the TPS2660x helps to simplify the system designs for surge protection.

The module integrates a synchronous step-down converter and an inductor to simplify design, reduce external components and save PCB area. The low profile and compact solution is suitable for automated assembly by standard surface mount equipment.

To maximise efficiency, the converter operates in PWM mode with a nominal switching frequency of 2MHz and automatically enters Power Save Mode operation at light load currents. In Power Save Mode, the device operates with typically 20µA quiescent current. Using the DCS-Control topology, the device achieves excellent load transient performance and accurate output voltage regulation.

TVS3300: The TVS3300 is a transient voltage suppressor which provides robust protection for electronic circuits exposed to high transient voltage events. Unlike a traditional TVS diode, the TVS3300 precision clamp triggers at a lower breakdown voltage and regulates to maintain a flat clamping voltage throughout a transient overvoltage event.

The lower clamping voltage combined with a low dynamic resistance enables a unique TVS protection solution that can lower the voltage a system is exposed during a surge event by up to 30% in unidirectional configuration and up to 20% in bidirectional configuration when compared to traditional TVS diodes. The low clamping voltage and flat clamping performance allow designers to confidently select downstream system components with maximum voltage rating than is possible with traditional TVS diodes, saving system cost, board area and improving overall performance.

REF3425: The REF3425 device is a low temperature drift (6 ppm/°C), low power, high precision CMOS voltage reference, featuring ±0.05% initial accuracy, low operating current with power consumption less than 95µA . This device also offers very low output noise of 5µVp-p /V, which enables its ability to maintain high signal integrity with high resolution data converters and noise critical systems. With a small SOT-23 package, REF3425 offers enhanced specifications and pin-to-pin replacement for MAX6071 and ADR3425.

Reliable HMI Display Power Solutions
