It’s been ten years this month since Teledyne Reynolds opened its manufacturing facility in Cwmbran, South Wales and, despite being originally established to serve the booming telecom market of the millennium, the facilities, capabilities and business through the factory has continued to grow, playing a major part in the growth and development of the Teledyne Reynolds business in the UK.
/> On July 17th 2000 Teledyne Reynolds took a lease on three units on the Springvale estate in Cwmbran with a view to manufacturing a range of RF microwave cables for a major European telecom customer. A core staff of local workers was recruited, all having been trained and skilled by major electronics companies that had moved into South Wales and the facility opened for business in September 2000. The business grew over the next few years to such an extent that further units were leased and the core workforce supplemented by temporary staff to maintain increasing production requirements.

Utilising the lean and cellular manufacturing techniques in which they had been trained, the workforce set about establishing the units into a highly productive and efficient manufacturing facility, at its peak producing up to 15,000 assemblies in one week. With 100% quality and on-time delivery record over the next few years the business continued to deliver to existing customers and also to attract new customers from all market sectors including military and commercial antennas and also road traffic applications.

In September 2009 the business moved from its five units on Springvale to a new 5,500 square feet facility two miles away on the Avondale estate. Now housed under one roof and with room to layout the facility into cells covering high and medium volume manufacturing, test, stores and inspection areas, the Cwmbran facility continues to serve both long-established external customers and also as an “internal supplier” to the HQ business in Newbury, manufacturing complex cable harness sub-assemblies for integration into completed units.

With AS9100 and ISO14001 accreditation the Cwmbran business model is built on a combination of stringent manufacturing disciplines and structured processes, together with a flexibility and desire to provide the best service to its customers and, as such, will continue to provide a valuable and efficient feature of the Teledyne Reynolds manufacturing capability.
