QNX Redefines the Mobile Office with First In-Car Email Integration with Bluetooth Smartphones at CES
QNX Software Systems Co., the global leader in operating systems and middleware for the in-car telematics and infotainment market, announced it will demonstrate the world’s first in-vehicle mobile office integration of Bluetooth®-enabled smartphones in the sleek BMW Z4 Roadster at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The new system is designed to make it possible for drivers to use smartphones safely and conveniently while in their cars.
QNX Software Systems is showcasing the latest BMW ConnectedDrive® system, powered by QNX® software technology, which is the first to give drivers access to email messages from Bluetooth-connected BlackBerry® smartphones. The messages appear on the BMW iDrive display when the car is stationary, but drivers can also listen to messages, especially when the car is in motion, simply by pressing a button. The integration of email and text messaging into BMW ConnectedDrive leverages the new Bluetooth Message Access Protocol (MAP), which is currently available only on select BlackBerry smartphones. Like previous BMW ConnectedDrive features, these new capabilities are designed to make using smartphones in BMW vehicles safer and more convenient.
The BMW ConnectedDrive System is based on the QNX® Neutrino® Realtime Operating System (RTOS). It also incorporates the QNX® multimedia suite, which provides seamless integration with smartphones, media players, USB drives, and other mobile devices.
BMW ConnectedDrive is a comprehensive suite of features focused on three key areas: safety, convenience, and infotainment. Many BMW ConnectedDrive features are available on the full range of 2011 BMW models.
“BMW has been a long-time pioneer in bringing communications and connectivity to cars. And with the new mobile messaging functionality in BMW ConnectedDrive, it is once again leading the way,” said Derek Kuhn, vice president, sales and marketing, QNX Software Systems. “QNX is pleased to continue to work alongside BMW in breaking new ground in car connectivity and to provide the realtime infotainment platform that makes ConnectedDrive’s advanced features possible.”
QNX Software Systems has licensed its software technology for more than 20 million in-vehicle systems worldwide, including digital instrument clusters, handsfree systems, multimedia head units, connectivity modules, and 3D navigation systems. The QNX Neutrino RTOS forms the foundation of the QNX CAR™ Application Platform, which accelerates the prototyping and productizing of in-vehicle systems through an innovative business model and a wealth of pre-integrated technologies.
