PowerCell has become part of the EU project H2Marine
PowerCell has joined the ranks of the H2Marine project, a 42-month European Union initiative dedicated to pioneering hydrogen technologies tailored for maritime use.
This project focuses on the design, development, testing, and deployment of Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell stacks capable of producing 250-300kW power. Initiated in January 2024, H2Marine is a collaborative effort involving 13 partners from both corporate and academic spheres, led by the Centre for Research & Technology-Hellas (CERTH). It benefits from a funding package of €7.5 million, courtesy of the European Commission's Horizon Europe framework and the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, with additional support from the European Union (EU) and the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research, and Innovation (SERI).
The project's core mission is to advance fuel cell technology to withstand the demanding conditions of maritime environments. Leveraging its maritime experience and leadership in fuel cell solutions, PowerCell is set to play a role in this endeavour.
Lisa Kylhammar, SVP Engineering at PowerCell, shared her enthusiasm: “The H2Marine project means we can improve our existing fuel cell platform in a segment where we are at the forefront. We already have validated and certified technology for marine use and this gives us opportunities to take significant steps forward. I am confident that the collaboration with the other members, combined with our solid industry knowledge, will enable a faster transition for a green maritime industry.”
The development of enhanced fuel cell technologies through this project is expected to open new markets and bolster the marine industry's sustainability. PowerCell anticipates leveraging the insights gained to enhance the durability and reliability of its offerings across various customer segments.
