Nordic Semiconductor, a provider of low-power wireless IoT connectivity solutions, has announced that its ambitious greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

This news follows a recent announcement Nordic made about the introduction of its recycled component reels as it looks to reduce its plastic waste. In the announcement, it said it would cut plastic waste by approximately 15,000kg annually.

The SBTi has endorsed Nordic Semiconductor’s net-zero target for 2050, currently the highest level of ambition recognised through the SBTi process.

“Receiving validation from the SBTi is a significant achievement for Nordic Semiconductor,” said Ola Bostrøm, Senior Vice President of Quality, Nordic Semiconductor. “It confirms that our climate strategy and commitment to greenhouse gas emissions reduction are in line with the Paris Agreement's goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C. The SBTi validated targets provide a clear, science-based path to what level we must reduce our greenhouse gas emissions in both our own operations, and in our value chain.”

In the near term, Nordic Semiconductor pledges to reduce its direct and indirect GHG emissions from energy usage (‘Scope 1’ and ‘Scope 2’) by 60 percent by 2030, using 2019 as the baseline year. Additionally, Nordic plans to reduce its emissions intensity (emissions relative to value added) for other indirect emissions (‘Scope 3’) by 60 percent by 2030, with 2019 as the baseline. Nordic aims to achieve these goals by decreasing energy consumption, increasing the use of renewable energy within its operations, and collaborating with stakeholders across its value chain.

Looking further ahead, Nordic Semiconductor is committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. This means any residual GHG emissions within its value chain will be neutralised by that date, in accordance with SBTi criteria.
