Successful 5G signalling tests have been announced by Rohde & Schwarz and MediaTek, using a device equipped with MediaTek's new Helio M70 5G modem, ensuring the modem is compatible and ready for 5G NR deployment. The tests were carried out using an R&S CMW500 wideband radio communication tester and the R&S CMX500 5G NR signalling tester.

The test setup provided a 5G network simulation with a signalling connection compliant with 3GPP Release 15. 5G NR will initially operate in non-standalone (NSA) mode, largely relying on existing 4G LTE infrastructure, and then migrate to standalone (SA) mode using 5G NR network infrastructure.

Anton Messmer, Vice President Mobile Radio Testers at Rohde & Schwarz, says: "Taking into consideration the longstanding cooperation between Rohde & Schwarz and MediaTek, this collaboration once again proves the dedication of both companies to bringing 5G technology to users around the world in the earliest possible time."

JS Pan, General Manager of Wireless System Design and Partnership at MediaTek, says: "MediaTek’s Helio M70 is the industry's fastest sub-6GHz modem and is expected to appear in next generation 5G devices by 2020. Helio M70 is the only 5G chipset with dual LTE and 5G connectivity and multimode capability that supports all current cellular generations from 2G to 5G. It presents an ideal solution to deliver a 5G experience with ultra-fast connectivity and intelligent power saving."

The R&S CMX500 5G NR signalling tester can be easily integrated into the existing Rohde & Schwarz LTE test setup. Together with the R&S CMW500 wideband communication tester, it provides a versatile test solution during R&D. The tester supports both SA and NSA mode.

Using this future-proof setup, developers of 5G user equipment and infrastructure can quickly and reliably demonstrate and assure 5G NR compliance of their devices.
