DEVAR, a global developer of the MyWebAR platform, has introduced 3D object tracking that utilises computer vision to recognise real-world objects. Now creators can augment pretty much any object around them.

This new type of tracking for webXR has emerged from a stack of in-house computer vision technologies. It allows users to recognise, track, and map augmented reality content even to monotone real-world objects, without relying on textural elements or shape features. The top priority of the DEVAR team was achieving the highest levels of tracking performance that remains consistent regardless of the object's position, movement, or light conditions.

The key aspect for developers and users is that the range of applications of augmented reality is expanding and getting more accessible. You no longer need contrast images on the object to recognise and track it. Now the object itself is the target, even if it is completely monotone.

The old way to recognise real-world objects was based on image recognition bringing serious limitations. For example, if the image of a figurine was captured from the frontal position, it would stop being recognised when the user moved around it or looked at it from a different angle. The 3D object tracking technology allows users to avoid such problems, since it can recognise the object from any angle. It anchors the augmented reality content to the specific parts of the object defined by the creator of the AR experience.

Who is this technology for?

This announcement was well-received and evaluated in various industries, including automotive, construction, industrial, tourism, and fashion.

Andrei Komissarov, Founder and CTO DEVAR: “We work in two main areas – computer vision and content creation. Computer vision allows us to train the camera to recognise the world around it and the objects in it. With an AR headset, you can see the world in real time, while the designed AR content completes your experience. We aim for the ideal point where the combination of technology allows you to create content fast and consume it seamlessly. 3D object tracking is a logical milestone for us and opens up huge opportunities for new industries in augmented reality. Of course, we cannot disclose the full details about everything we have under development, but I can say that it can be called the perfect super vision, which allows us to take interaction with the real world and augmented reality content to a whole new level.

How it works?

Users need a single 3D model of the object in OBJ format with the optimal file size of 5–10 MB, and augmented reality assets such as texts, buttons for website navigation, social networks, animations, music, videos, and more.

3D object tracking is currently available on the Enterprise plan of the MyWebAR platform.
